It was like saying often one remembers a lover but there are times when he does not. Then there came the question in the next line that said, вЂњAll that I love?вЂќ The interrogative statement was posed for self-examination which was, in the next stanza, assured with the lines вЂњWhy, yes but for the moment-/ And for all time, both.вЂќ The two lines are an oxymoron for love can be both temporal and eternal. Memory stays with a person forever but it is often unreliable which is why there is a need to simplify love if it has become overwhelming so that it is easy to handle and quick to retrieve the memories from the labyrinths of the mind. In the first stanza, Bonsai describes everything one loves as something that could be folded into the smallest size so that one could вЂњkeep in a box/ Or a slit in a hollow post/ Or in my shoe.вЂќ The idea is to turn one large concept such as love into something that вЂњfolds and keeps easyвЂќ so that oneвЂ™s memory will not be cluttered. In this work of literature, love is the abstract idea.

The poem is an example of a work that is objective-correlative wherein the ideas depicted are abstract. This is the destructive nature of love which is why the award-winning poet Edith Tiempo, in her poem Bonsai, scaled down love into a вЂњcupped hand size.вЂќ And in the hands of people who are unable to control it, love overwhelms the person. It might sound cliche but itвЂ™s true.When love is great, when love is profound, it becomes more difficult to control. Even though something is folded into one tiny piece, that doesnвЂ™t stop it from being a big part in someoneвЂ™s life.В That goes to show that great things doesnвЂ™t always come in big packages. Like what the mother did, she folded here love into one small piece to make it easier to pass it on to her daughter. A Bonsai tree is small and with that trait it makes it easier for the Bonsai tree to be passed on. The poem talks about the mother folding, again and again, her love into a small piece so that she can pass it on to her daughter. That goes the same with love.Дigging deeper into the poem, the persona is actually a mother passing her love to her daughter, who is about to go into motherhood.

That is one of the comparisons the poem is telling us it is telling us that because the Bonsai tree is small, it is not profound, it made it easier for the growers of the tree to make it live for more than 800 years. Imagine making a normal tree live that long that sounds exhausting. Similar to a bonsai tree, love also needs the things that creates a bonsai tree.В Shown in the picture above, is an 800+ year old Bonsai tree in Japan. Stated in the paragraph above, a bonsai tree needs a lot of discipline, care, patience to make it grow healthy and beautiful. Relating it to love, when love is profound, when love is intense, it gets to a point where the person or partners canвЂ™t even control it anymore. The poem shows that when things are kept in small packages, it is easier to contain and pass over. The way that Edith Tiempo used a Bonsai tree to relate it to love is remarkable. Family love, girlfriend/boyfriend love, any kind of love known to mankind. I learned that the poem is all about love. But as soon as we discussed it in class, it became clearer and clearer. I didnвЂ™t know whether it is about love, life, or even the Bonsai tree itself. I was confused on what the poem really is about. At first, when I read the poem, I was saying to myself вЂњwhat is this poem talking about?вЂќ.

The poem by Edith Tiempo, the вЂњBonsaiвЂќ is a very beautiful poem. The discipline, the care, the patience that the owner needs to have in order to create a very delicate and beautiful Bonsai blows me away. The art originated from Japan and also in China but today, the art of growing Bonsai trees i being done all over the world. Bonsai is an art form that focuses on growing miniature trees in a container.
